Budapest (Hungary), Cape Town (South Africa), Genoa (Italy) and Wroclaw (Poland) submitted the comprehensive documentation required of an Applicant Host City to the International World Games Association (IWGA) before the deadline on 31 May 2011. Now the IWGA Executive Committee will evaluate these applications.
After a thorough review of the questionnaires and the supporting documents, representatives of the IWGA will visit the cities and prepare the shortlist of Candidate Host Cities. Following another evaluation, the Board will make its recommendation to the IWGA’s 33 Member Federations. The contract with the future Host City will be ratified at the IWGA General Meeting on the occasion of the 2012 SportAccord in Quebec, Canada.
IWGA President Ron Froehlich sees his impression that the multi-sport event is gaining more and more interest confirmed. ”It is obvious. We are growing. We are looking forward to see how the candidate cities will present themselves.” Ron Froehlich estimates the costs of staging The World Games at between 50 and 75 million dollars. In return, the organization of the multi-sport event brings the host city many opportunities.
The Games, held at 4-year intervals since 1981, showcase 30+ sports like Dance Sport, Squash, Tug of War, Sumo and Rugby. Approximately 4,500 athletes and officials from more than 100 countries take part in The World Games. The athletes compete for gold medals in nearly 200 events over 11 days. With Cali in Colombia being the current host city, the 2013 games will be staged on the South American continent for the first time.
